Last updated 12 September 2026
A BIS hallmark is an official certification issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards certifying that your gold jewellery's purity is genuine. Since 2021, hallmarking with a 6-digit HUID is mandatory for gold jewellery sold across India.

Mandatory 3 Marks Present on Hallmarked Gold

The Three Mandatory Marks to Check
When buying gold jewellery in India, inspect the item under magnification to ensure all three mandatory marks are laser-engraved:
- 1. The BIS Logo: A triangular mark representing the Bureau of Indian Standards.
- 2. Purity & Fineness Grade: Indicates exact purity:
- 24K999: 99.9% Pure Gold (Coins & Bars)
- 22K916: 91.6% Pure Gold (Traditional Jewellery)
- 18K750: 75.0% Pure Gold (Diamond & Gemstone Jewellery)
- 14K585: 58.5% Pure Gold (Everyday Wear)
- 3. 6-Digit Alphanumeric HUID: A Hallmark Unique Identification code (e.g.
A7B9C3) unique to that specific item.
How to Verify HUID in the BIS Care App
The Government of India provides the official BIS Care App (available on Android and iOS). You can verify any hallmarked gold article before making payment:
- Open the official BIS Care App on your smartphone.
- Tap on "Verify HUID".
- Enter the 6-digit HUID engraved on your jewellery piece.
- The app will instantly display the registered Jeweller Name, AHC Centre Name, Jeweller BIS Registration Number, Date of Hallmarking, and Certified Purity.
Check the Rate & Billed Invoice
Hallmarking confirms purity, not price. Always compare the day's gold rate today and check making charges across jewellers before buying.
