Gold Hallmarking (BIS): What to Check Before You Buy
Last updated 28 July 2026
A BIS hallmark is an official certification that your gold's purity is genuine. Since 2021 hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in most of India.
The three marks to look for
- The BIS logo (a triangle).
- The purity/fineness, e.g. 22K916, 18K750 or 24K999.
- A 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) unique to that piece.
Why it matters
Hallmarking guarantees you are paying for the purity you are billed for. You can verify a HUID in the free BIS Care app. Always insist on a proper tax invoice that states the purity and net gold weight separately from making charges.
Check the rate too
Hallmarking confirms purity, not price. Compare the day's gold rate and the making charges so you know the fair billed amount before you pay.
